NAC : Update on New Pets insurance contract law

The NAC (New Pets) are becoming more and more popular and you want to have one at home. What types of animals can be bred and which are not domesticable? What about the New Pet Insurance? Here are some answers.

NAC: definition

The term “NAC” is the acronym for “Nouveaux Animaux de Compagnie”, a concept originating in the 1980s. In France, more than 4 million households have such animals in their homes. The most popular species is the ferret, but many have parrots, guinea pigs, spiders, rabbits, snakes and many other species.

Authorized species

It is important to note that you can not bring any animal to your home. Even if certain species are authorized, in some cases you must first obtain a certificate of capacity issued by the competent authority. In any case, you have a wide choice between carnivores, rodents, primates, reptiles, lizards, insects, crustaceans, amphibians, arthropods, birds, fish, gallinacs and molluscs .

Special species

There are certain animals that you can not possess in your home, such as those that belong to the category of dangerous species, such as crocodile, scorpion and tarantula. The same applies to protected species such as the Vole, the Florida Turtle and the Hedgehog. Only breeding establishments are entitled to hold them, provided they receive a specific authorization. Individuals wishing to take on this type of species will have to obtain the legal status of a non-professional breeding establishment.

NAC Insurance

Many insurance companies currently offer contracts specially adapted for NACs. The level of care depends on the formula chosen. Generally, this coverage provides for reimbursement of the veterinarian’s consultation and prescribed medications, medical examination fees, vaccines, vitamins, pest control treatments, surgical costs and hospitalization. It is clear that insurance contracts for certain animals, such as spiders, iguanas and snakes, have specific clauses. It is therefore strongly advised to inquire beforehand to choose the appropriate formula.
